Vidal
Sassoon, (1928 –
2012) was a British hairdresser credited with creating the hairstyle known as
"The Bob.". Due to the
popularity of his styles, he was described as "a rock star, an artist and
a craftsman who 'changed the world with a pair of scissors.'" His clients
included Hollywood stars such as Ava Gardner, Rita Hayworth and Elizabeth
Taylor as well as the model Jean Shrimpton and fashion designer Mary Quant who
called him the ‘Chanel of hair’.
His "wash and wear" philosophy
liberated women from the "tyranny of the salon" and
"revolutionized the art of hairstyling".He changed the lives and
looks of women everywhere with his 1960’s geometric cuts that allowed women to
spend less time on their appearance and still look fabulous.
He opened his
first salon in 1954 in London. Sassoon's styles became "emblematic of
freedom and good health" and their popularity allowed him to open the
first chain of worldwide hair styling salons, complemented by his
hair-treatment products. Today salons increased to five in only city of
London and extended to England, Europe, USA and Canada. But the shout it’s
still the same. Beat. Revolutionary cuts, today
as at that time, for square, geodesic shapes that are unbelievably poetic and
sophisticated. Graduated colors , graphic
perimeter shape fringes decorate faces with a romantic rock allure.
After building a business with salons and
styling products, Sassoon sold the rights to his name to Richardson-Vicks, a
U.S. health and beauty supply company, in 1983. At that time his hair products
alone were netting Vidal Sassoon Inc about $113 million dollars a year. Procter&Gamble acquired Richardson-Vicks in 1985, and continued making products
using the Sassoon name.
In 1982, Sassoon started the Vidal Sassoon
International Center for the Study of Antisemitism. After selling his company,
he then worked towards philanthropic causes such as the Boys Clubs of America and
the Performing Arts Council of the Music Center of LA via his Vidal Sassoon
Foundation.
Procter & Gamble
Regis
Corporation.
(SICSA).
A Year of Beauty
«Your New Day with Vidal Sassoon»
He
shocked the world when he chopped off actress Mia Farrow's hair in 1967 for the
movie Rosemary's Baby and gave her the pixie still worn by many actresses today
such as Emma Watson , Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan, Victoria Beckham, Gennifer
Goodwin and Alyssa Milano.
He certainly contributed to the world of fashion through hair design. His legacy will live on...
